Two Ultra Marathon Runners, Kerry Ward and Pat Malavi take on the legendary West Coast Trail in a one day flash. Starting from the south end and heading north, it was a beautiful day for the attempt. Conditions were warm, but close to optimal for this legendary mud-bog of a trail. This video shows highlights from the experience including, a dark canoe trip at the start, whale sightings, cable car crossing, trail bear, a dead alien life form, lots of ladders, shipwrecks, water filter woes and an encounter with an incredible aqua-man who emerged from the sea. If you are considering taking this trail on as a one day run or multi-day experience, this video will show you what you may expect to encounter.
Also, FYI, for people considering doing this in one day this is NOT an easy run. I think by eliminating the need for large packs containing sleeping bags, tents, clothing, etc., the trip is easier. Nearly every hiker we encounted did a bit of a confused double take as they processed our ‘lack of pack’. Our answer to their question, ‘How many days?” always provoked a response (100% positive, BTW) when we said, “One”.
Prior to this run, both Pat and I had done heavy ultra marathon training. Both of us have undertaken runs significantly longer than the WCT, so we were confident in our ablility to cover the distance. If you have not run multiple 50+ mile events, I wouldn’t consider doing this trail in a single day. If you have plenty of ultra experience under your belt, game on. The logistics are the critical thing to get right. There are no exit points other than the top and bottom of the trail once you’ve committed.

By choosing to get yourself Brisbane car rentals, you have made the first good choice, because this is by far one of the easiest ways to get around town. Not only do you save a lot of money, which you would otherwise spend on cabs or buses; you also get to discover the city at your own pace. There are no tour guides to rush you or tell you that you have only ten minutes at a place, where you would love to have thirty.
If you have done any research prior to coming to Australia, you will realize that there are several trips to be taken in and around the city. Fortunately, quite a few of these are the kinds, which will not sway your budget too much. Get yourself a car hire in Brisbane and you will be able to drive yourself and your family up to Bribie Island. Just the ride itself it so excellent, that you might never want to reach the destination! However, once you do reach there, you will have plenty of activities to keep you busy, including surfing, kayaking or just lying around, getting your suntan.
Car rentals in Brisbane also let you drive up to nearby beaches like Caloundra, where you can spend a fun day in the sun with the ones you love. You could catch a few surfs, play on the beach and then get yourself a delicious lunch of fish and chips. The kids in your family will be very happy, when they see that all their favorite flavors of ice cream are available.
However, if you have already gotten to that particular shade of tan that you wanted, you might want a place where you can protect it. The hills of Maleny are a great destination for you to head to, because here you can experience the charm and pristine beauty of the hinterlands. Your kids will love watching the birds and animals, while you prepare a barbecue lunch for them.
Mount Tamborine also offers you an inexpensive destination to head to, because entry into the national park will not cost you much. After that, you simply pick a trail of our liking and become adventurers! You could choose to see the glowworm caves or take a trip to one of the markets in town. Even if you do not purchase anything at the market, it is a great way to spend the day and soak in the local atmosphere.
The city of Marrakech used to be an imperial city in Morocco, brimming with character. Much of it has been preserved today for the world to see. Being the economic centre of Morocco, there is much to explore in Marrakech. From mosques to palaces and from markets to gardens, Marrakech will not disappoint you. If visiting Morocco with less time in hand, you can plan a trip to this city, which offers you day-long picnics to happening tourist destinations. All that is required is that there should be a group of at least two people for the trip. One might even get to travel at discounted prices. Also, there are a wide variety of Sahara desert trips from Marrakech on a daily basis. All these trips are filled with adventure and excitement, thus making them a once in a lifetime experience. So here are a few highlights of the day trips:
• Atlas Mountains – This destination is a one-and-a-half hour drive south towards Moulay Brahim Gorges in Asni. A weekly market takes place here on every Saturday. Situated on the upper level foothills of the Atlas Mountains is a place called Imlil, which is the next destination of this picnic. This further leads to the main trailhead to Mt. Toubkal and other valleys. If you still have the energy to go further out, there is a hike towards the south of Berber village of Aroumd, hamlets of Ait Suka, up and down the stark slopes Arga Imoula, the Toubkal Massif along with Adrar Adj, Jbels Aguelzim, and the Aksouâl.
• Kasbah Ait Benhaddou – In this adventure, the group experiences the High Atlas Mountains as well as the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, which is the highest in Africa. While reaching the other side, the mountains the landscapes change suddenly, turning to semi-arid. Here, one can enjoy the unique Kasbah architecture that makes the traditional houses very suitable for the climatic conditions of the area. The next destination is the ruins of Telouet Kasbah, which was owned by the Glaoui family who were said to be the Lords of the Atlas. The group then takes lunch at Ait Benhaddou. Post lunch, the last destination is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, which has served as a backdrop for a large number of Hollywood blockbusters. The group then returns to Marrakech.
• Ouzoud Waterfalls – Ouzoud waterfalls are the highest waterfalls of Morocco and are situated in the middle of the Atlas section, which is quite close to Azilal city. The group takes a guided tour around the waterfalls here. This is where the excursion ends, and the group is taken for lunch before returning to Marrakech.
Taking a trip to any of these destinations is quite exciting and the experience of a lifetime. These day-trips can turn out to be a great idea if the duration of stay is less than two days, or if one just plans an outing with family or friends on an off day from work.
