Low Budget Travel Tips

The easiest answer to go on a low budget vacation is choosing your hotels and restaurants wisely. The following destinations in the world will let you enjoy your vacation to the fullest, while not affecting your budget.

Ios, Greece
Ios is widely known for the vibrant nightlife and parties. Hotels here start at a very low price of $ 13.50 a night! That's pretty much a good amount for vacation rentals. At sunset, you will find numerous people from all over the world filled in the discos and partying. Greek, Italian, Thai, Cuisines are not at all an issue here. But, make sure you check the restaurant prices before eating there!

Margarita Island, Venezuela
Located off the coast of Venezuela, the Margarita Island is a tropical paradise having tons of beaches. Margarita boasts vacation rentals for hotels at only $ 13.50 a night too! It is best known for the scuba diving, fishing and horseback riding. Night clubs and bars are not a problem. There are tons around the island for you to visit and party hard. The capital of Chile surrounded by the exquisite Andes mountains offers mind boggling scenery. Hotels here are dirt cheap too! It's known for the beaches and its world renowned skiing hills. Walking around the city will take you through tons of markets and beautiful parks. Its nightlife is quite a turn on too! Like Margarita, you will find food from all over the world here, though the seafood is the best to have! It's one of the places for cheap vacation rentals.

Prague, Czech Republic
This beautiful Roman city, although slightly more expensive than other places, have reasonably priced vacation rentals at $ 23 a night! Like other Roman cities, Prague has beautiful building built over a thousand years ago. Prague is known worldwide for its nightlife. You can get any kind of food here, from Thai to Russian.

Costa Rica
Considering the breathtaking vivid scenery in Costa Rica, the vacation rentals here range from only $ 7 to $ 15 a night! Costa Rica is probably one of the places to go for if you want to see nature's beauty, like beautiful mountains, beaches, parks, rivers, and of course – Monteverde.

Vancouver, British Columbia
Vancouver, boasting vacation rentals at $ 9 a night, is a bargain for this paradise. The breathtaking view of the mountains and the ocean surrounding the city is a must see. The Whistler Mountain is great for skiing or just admiring the beautiful lakes and valleys. Entertainment here is a breeze; and so is the nightlife. Vancouver is renowned for its international cuisine. You'll sit there licking your fingers!

Wisely choosing your vacation spot can help greatly reduce the cost of your vacation, and keep up with your budget! Cheap vacation home rentals are sometimes difficult to find. But when you do, you'll love the amount of time and money you save!

Tips for Booking Hotels Overseas

If you've been using a travel guide book, it is going to have hotel recommendations included. Most have reviews, include pricing, or at least pricing categories, for each one. Many will be able to be booked online.

However, some of the smaller, independently owned hotels still do the booking themselves. Most you can correspond with via email, but some are a little more old fashioned, and only take reservations over the phone. If that is the case, do not let the thought of calling internationally and speaking to someone that English may not be their first tongue, intimidate you. These are business people that make a living providing rooms to tourists that, guess what, probably do not speak their native language. They all speak enough English to take a reservation!

Take a look at your itinerary, and start booking these hotels for each location. You generally want to book at least 2-3 months prior, just to ensure you are able to get exactly the hotel you want. If you're traveling during the peak season, you might want to start a little earlier. Most hotels do require a credit card to book the room, but most will allow you to pay in cash upon arrival.

Once these hotels are booked, write down the contact information (hotel name, address, phone number) and save for your records. There is also an awesome website called Tripit, that has an itinerary maker tool that allows you to either enter this information in manually, or it even has a feature that you can forward them any confirmation emails (for hotels, and even airline info) , and it will actually do it for you.

For my hotel choices, I go middle of the road here. I can not afford to stay in five star hotels, but I do not want to be inconvenienced by uncomfortable circumstances like an over crowded Youth Hostel. I prefer to have the best of both worlds: experiencing the country, people, and culture that I've immersed myself in, while not staying in "sketchy" accommodations. I lean toward small, independently owned hotels, near the city central, but sheltered from the areas that are choked with tourists.

Plus, most of these independently owned small hotels are run by the owners themselves, who are always MORE than happy to help out their guests. They are one of the best travel advisers you will run into while you're there. They can tell you where the best local places are to eat, the easiest ways to navigate the city, to even helping you book museum reservations and tours.

General Cycling Tips and Tricks

Do you love cycling? If you do, then congratulations. Cycling is both a fun and effective workout that gives you a ton of energy, but there are a few musts when it comes to cycling. It does not matter if you are an expert or a beginner, a cyclist should remember these few tips.

Before you start your cycling expedition, make sure you have the proper equipment. A sturdy road/mountain bike, the proper clothing, extra chains, few bolts, screws, and bottled water are all essential. It is important to be prepared before and during your cycling routine.

A 10-15 minute warm up is recommended before you cycle at top speed or for long distances. A warm up helps stretch out the leg and arm muscles, and it helps to avoid cramping. Warm-ups are important in any type of active exercise and cycling is no different.

For beginners and people who have not ridden their bicycle in a while, it is important to cycle in intervals. Cycling intervals refer to the speed and power you use during a bike ride. Interchanging between a few minutes of full speed and a few minutes of light cycling will help prep you for a more prolonged and strenuous cycling workout.

To become more physically equipped with cycling, try some strength training workouts. Tone and strengthen your core and leg muscles to add some power during your bike rides. Try adding resistance by going uphill. Extra inclination really makes you work out your leg muscles to their fullest power.

A healthy cycling routine is a combination of aerobic exercise with a nutritious lifestyle. For example, including a lot of protein in your diet helps build muscle for more power and endurance. Being healthy by eating fruits, vegetables, and avoiding fatty products is very important. Since cycling is the perfect aerobic exercise for losing and maintaining your weight, it will not do you any good to eat unhealthily.

The benefits of cycling are incredible. It lowers the risk of heart disease, diabetes, keeps you in shape, and prolongs your life expectancy. If you are able to combine a great cycling program with a healthy lifestyle and avoid dangerous habits of drinking and smoking, then you will be cycling well in to your 80’s.

Everything also depends on how you set up your training program. Cycling is beneficial only when it is done the right and safe way. A good cycling program is one that makes an improvement in your life. A bad one can be a safety hazard to your health.

Cycling is fun and exciting for all ages because it is simple yet effective. If you cycle a few days a week, you are guaranteed to feel better about yourself and have loads more energy. Have a great ride.

Tips For a Sailing Holiday – Ionian Islands in Greece

Sailing in Greece is perfect when you are in the Ionian Islands. Ionian Islands is a group of islands located in the western portion of Greece. It is perfectly situated along the Ionian Sea on the coasts of Peloponnesus and Epirus. Its major islands are Paxos, Cythea, Ithaca, Lefkas, Zacynthus, Cephalonia, and Corfu.

The islands first inmates were the Ancient Greeks. They first arrived to the islands probably near the beginning of the 9th or 10th century BC. However, it was later ruled by other western civilizations. Among them are the Roman (146 BC), Byzantium (300 AD), and the Venetian Empires (1204 AD). Subsequently, before it was acquired by Greece in 1864 and claimed the island as part of the country's official territory, the island was earlier yielded to other countries. These include France (1807), Russia (1799), Turkey (1799), and the United Kingdom (1815).

Ionian Islands is also known as Eptanisa or the Seven Islands because of its 7 main islands. Because of its mild climate and nice ports, it became one of Greece's most visited yacht charter areas along the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

When you are sailing in Greece, it is very common to sight gulet motorsailers, yachts, flotillas, and bareboats. If you are taking your holiday vacation with your kids or the whole family, sailing in Ionian Islands is ideal for you. This is because the islands has calm seas and gentle winds. Travelers who are not skilled in sailing can also take advantage of the islands perfect climate.

Sailing in Greece through the Ionian Islands is an ideal holiday vacation. The islands has several harbors and docks that can be used as a charter base. Preveza, Corfu, and Lefkas are Ionian Islands 3 yacht charter bases. From these 3 ports, the most visited and accredited is the Lefkas harbor. Lefkas is characterized by its apt Mediterranean climate and interesting trekked mountains. Furthermore, its beaches have golden sand and full-size waves. Lefkas' most beautiful beaches include Perigiali, Nikiana, and Nidri.

On the other hand, some sailing tourists favor the Preveza port. It is located along the Amvrakia Gulf. The port is distinguished by its sturdy crosscurrent.

Sailing in Greece has never been this exciting. Aside from enjoying the Ionian Islands scenic environment, you can also take pleasure in the island's fascinating ancient histories.

Top Tips for Going to the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is known as the lungs of the Earth and along with the Congo and New Guinea is one of the last tropical wildernesses touched by human hands. The Amazon Rainforest is the largest container of wildlife on our planet and is home to many exotic species you may have seen in film or television.

Tourism in the Amazon region has slowly been growing but is still in its infancy. After a shaky start, tourism is now recognized as a means to help conserve the rainforests (if properly managed) and offers an alternate source of revenue for local communities to destructive activities such as logging. In fact, some authors have labeled logging in these places as 'destroying the goose that lays the golden egg', as once the forest is destroyed it will take 100 years or over to restore the level of diversity (dependent on proximate of near pristine forest ). It is the incredible diversity that draws Amazon Rainforest tourists.

There are many tours in the Amazon Rainforest to choose from. However, only a fraction offer the level of service and comfort that we have grown to expect from the tourism industry in combination with exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities and an environmental awareness.

Some of the tours to look out for in the Amazon Rainforest that receive constant and stable positive feedback are what the following paragraphs are about. I will start with Iquitos in northern Peru, the western Amazon Rainforest.

Near Iquitos, the most recommended lodge is the Tahuayo Lodge in the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve located 150 km down the Amazon River from the city itself. The Tahuayo Lodge offers private guides, a canopy zipline, and the most extensive list of itinerary options in the Amazon. One of the reasons for the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve establishment was to protect a rather unusual looking monkey named the Uakari.

For cruises near Iquitos city, the pick of the crop are the Delfin I and the Delfin II. The Delfin I is a luxury cruise where you can relax in your personal spa while watching the rainforest gently pass your bedroom. Both the Delfin I and Delfin II offer a comfortable way to explore the flood tropical habitat of the famous Pacaya Samiria National Park.

If you venture to the eastern Amazon side of the Amazon Rainforest you can consider basing yourself in the city of Manaus, Brazil, where you can take an expedition cruise aboard the 7 day Tucano Amazon Cruise or the 5 day Tucano Jungle Cruise. You will leave the vessel at key points in the forest to explore Amazon plants and animals with a professional guide.

7 Tips For Punta Cana Vacationers

Punta Cana is located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic in the heart of the Caribbean. It is known for luxury accommodations tastefully blended into its beautiful natural surroundings. It has become quite popular for a quick warm winter escape for people in Canada, Europe, and the United States. They come by the thousands to bask in the Punta Cana when it is wintery cold in their own countries.

If you are contemplating a vacation to Punta Cana, I want to pass along 7 travel tips that will make your stay more enjoyable:

Avoid Taking a Taxi If You can

There is nothing particularly wrong with the taxis in the Punta Cana area but the rates can be exorbitant. For a comparison, a faire that will only cost $4 -$5 in Santo Domingo (the capital city of the Dominican Republic) may cost you $20 – $40 in Punta Cana!

To avoid taxis, try to negotiate with your travel agent for an airport transfer, both coming and going, to be included in the package deal — many are and if you shop it, you should be able to find this. If you take an excursion to one of the parks or islands, be sure to ask the tour operator if the cost of the excursion includes picking you up at your resort or hotel and bringing you back — again, many do so you should be able to find this. You can also rent a car for a reasonable fee instead of a taxi. Many of the big name car rental places are there: Avis, Budget, Eurocar, National, and Prestige. If you are seriously budget minded, you can also take the bus called the guagua which covers the entire Punta Cana coast and beyond. Buses run every 15 – 30 minutes. If you need to travel to Santo Domingo, be sure to look for the Bavaro Express.

How To Find the Whitest Beach

The most coveted beaches in the Dominican Republic seem to be the powdery white beaches — the whiter the better in my people’s book. Tourists love the beauty of these beaches and also how the silky fine sand feels between their toes. However, not all “Punta Cana” beaches are white.

What tourists often don’t realize is that what has now become known as the “Punta Cana” coast of the Dominican Republic runs for about 38-39 miles. This is the entire east coast of the Dominican Republic. The color of the sand varies significantly along this stretch. In general, the further south you go, the whiter the sand. The Punta Cana coast is shaped like an arrowhead pointing to the east. Where the arrow comes to a point is called El Macao. To the north of this point, the white sands start to turn more golden in color. This can be very pretty as well but if you are a true aficionado of pure white sand, you’ll probably want to look for a resort south of El Macao or find a resort on the southeast coast.

How To Get Through Customs More Easily

First, let me tell you some good news. Getting through customs at the Punta Cana Airport is much easier than the Santo Domingo Airport or other Caribbean Airports such as Cancun. With that said, however, there are some simple things you can do to lessen the chance you’ll have any kind of hassle going through customs.

As soon as you arrive in Punta Cana, you’ll need to get a “tourist card” which costs only $10 and you can get them at the airport before you go through customs. However, there can be a line for these so if you want to speed things up, try to get this included in your package deal so you will have a tourist card handed to you before you get off the plane. The customs agents can be a little picky about anything that could be construed as a “sharp object.” Items such as knitting needles and umbrellas can be considered “sharp objects” and can hold you up and may even be confiscated. Be sure to put these types of items in your checked luggage to avoid issues. Also, make sure all your prescription medications are CLEARLY labeled. There is a strict no tolerance for drugs in the Dominican Republic so you don’t want to give the customs agents any reason for concern. Another big “no-no: both coming in and going out is ANYTHING derived from plant material or animal parts. This can include hats made out of coconut fibers, shells, fruit, wood carvings, etc… These items will be confiscated and can make going through customs more lengthy than it need be. There are exceptions such as amber jewelry containing insect parts. The real concern is the spreading of insects and microorganisms across the border.

Stand Your Ground On Public Beaches

Officially, all beaches in the Dominican Republic are public. However, many of the resorts like to put up signs and patrol the beaches in front of their resorts as if they had a private beach.

When you are walking the beach, just know that you allowed to walk any of the beach and you should politely hold your ground should someone approach you and indicate otherwise. Just let them know you only intend to pass through.

Tipping Expectations & Giving Gifts To the Locals

It is expected that you will tip waiters and waitresses. 5-10% is considered the norm. Bartenders are often tipped $1 per round, sometimes more if the drinks are more complicated to make. Hotel maids are often tipped $2 – $5 per day and airport porters $1 per bag. It is also expected that you will tip tour guides as well. Guides usually get $5 for half day excursions and $5 – $10 for full day excursions.

It is also becoming increasingly popular to leave gifts for the locals. Candy, toys, and school supplies for kids is very popular. Books, make-up, and costume jewelry are commonly left. It is best that you check with the tour guides you go out with and the hotel staff to determine what might be most appropriate and most needed items to bring along as gifts. Remember this is a country that is a “third world” country with an emerging economy and there are many needs.

Find a Resort That Matches Your Needs

Different resorts cater to different needs. Some resorts cater to families with children. Others are “adult only” and cater to those couples who are looking for a romantic getaway without children under foot. Many resorts in the Punta Cana area follow the European customs. Some Americans like this but some don’t. If you don’t, be sure to find a resort that caters more to the American customs.

You may want to get a complete list of all activities offered at the resorts you are considering as this will often help make your decision on which one to choose much easier. Some resorts offer better activities for the kids — some are supervised and some are not. Some offer sailing, surfing, wind-surfing, dancing, scuba, and other very desirable classes. Some have activities such as horse-back riding and dune buggies that others do not. Some resorts are better designed for the handicapped and others with special needs.

How To Take Punta Cana Excursions

Most resort vacation packages include some opportunities to take excursions away from the resort. Most are very simple such a boat ride out to a reef for snorkeling or to take a catamaran cruise to an island. However, the hotel tours are almost never the way to have the best adventure outside your resort. Local fishermen and other locals also often offer to take tourists out on their boats. These can really be hit or miss, more often miss unfortunately. You should also be aware that these locals are almost never licensed or bonded so if something were to happen, you’d be stuck.

You will have a much richer and memorable experience if you take Punta Cana excursions with an experience tour operators who specialize in providing excursions. Your excursion will also be much safer. The excursions that get the highest acclaim are those that offer eco-adventures where you really get to explore nature and culture in depth with people who truly care and have a deep knowledge and appreciation for the wildlife and people of the area. Take at least one of these types of excursions and compare them to what the resorts have to offer and the difference will become obvious to you.
